Aging in Place with Safety and Style The Sturgeons have been living in their Mississauga home since the 1970’s. Now retired and living the empty nester life with no kids and no aging parents to worry about, this couple returned their focus to themselves and how they wanted to live out their retirement years. They approached us with their vision to update their home with better functionality and safety so they could continue to live in their home with confidence as they themselves aged. Like most homes built in the 70’s, the Kitchen was closed off from the Dining Room and Family Room, and the main floor lacked a cohesive flow between spaces. The Kitchen cabinets were outdated, and the room lacked storage and counter space. In addition, the Master Bathroom was outdated and becoming inaccessible for them. Our Solution for the Main Floor We enlarged the entryways and opened the space between the Kitchen, Dining Room, and Family Room. This not only brightens and opens the space, it also creates an airy flow between the rooms. In the kitchen, we relocated the fridge, sink, and stove for better functionality. A large peninsula serving as an eating area was added, boasting plenty of useful storage. The layout changes we made to the kitchen provide separation of the preparation and gathering spaces, just as the Sturgeons desired. A cabinet dedicated for small countertop appliances, and updated cabinetry throughout provides much for the needed storage solutions and visual appeal in this previously lackluster space. The existing hardwood was replaced with practical and attractive vinyl tiling, selected to compliment the flooring in the rooms on either side. The selection available today in vinyl flooring products means the (Sturgeons don’t have to sacrifice ease for appeal. Matte black plumbing fixtures were selected to compliment the vinyl flooring and the bright white cabinetry and two-toned quartz countertops with matching backsplash complete the look of clean elegance in this Kitchen. Our Solution for the Master Bathroom The Sturgeons’ Master Bathroom was becoming inaccessible for them, and the existing bathtub was difficult to get into. We removed the bathtub and replaced it with a large barrier-free shower featuring a wide glass door and seating space. We installed decor-matching grab bars in both the shower and toilet areas for the extra safety this couple will need as they age in their home. A new large prefabricated vanity was installed, offering plenty of new functional storage. The new ceramic tiles and plumbing fixtures tie everything together, while the neutral paint and accessory tones evoke a feeling of safety and tranquility. This couple couldn’t be happier with the end result, and everything was finished on time! They now enjoy the bright, functional, and comfortable home they dreamt of; and they have peace of mind their home will meet their needs for years to come. Want to hear from them directly?
