Open Concept Kitchen Remodel in Mississauga
Our retired clients approached us to renovate the Kitchen and Powder Room in their 1993 home, which they have lived in for 30 years.
As they love to entertain and have visits with their grandchildren, they needed the Renovation to focus on creating an updated and open-concept Main Floor to make their home to look and feel more spacious and inviting.
Their Kitchen was outdated and cramped, lacking in counter space and storage. The Powder Room was dated, and the plumbing fixtures were lacking in both looks and function. As they love to cook and bake, a more open and functional Kitchen was a must.
The closed-off Main Floor was lacking in flow and function. As the Dining Room and Living Room both felt closed off and isolated, they were often unused. As well, the Main Staircase was carpeted with wooden pickets and needed a modern facelift.
Finding the right contractor for a major home renovation can be stressful. These clients, after several vague and inconsistent consultations with other contractors, felt uneasy about moving forward. Conversations were unclear, pricing lacked transparency, and crucial details like permits were inconsistent.
A Different Approach
Their experience with Sosna was refreshingly different. Sosna provided a clear plan and explained the renovation process in detail, giving them the confidence to proceed. They envisioned an open-concept main floor, ideal for entertaining family and friends, especially their grandchildren, but needed help bringing it to life.

Designing the Dream
Despite choosing Sosna, some concerns lingered. To address these, their dedicated Sosna designers, Camila and Tiffany, collaborated closely with the couple. The designers helped refine their ideas and solidify the direction of the renovation. Camila’s expertise and guidance reassured the homeowners, and they found themselves not only trusting the team but actually enjoying the design process. They realized that their dream home was within reach.
This renovation was truly memorable, not just for the stunning transformation but also for the unique story behind it. Our clients had lived in their home for many years, making only minor repairs along the way. They always dreamed of renovating but, as they told us at the Home Show where we first met, “Life got in the way!” Now retired and eager to enjoy their home and neighborhood for years to come, they felt the time was finally right.
One of their main concerns was the potential loss of a dedicated dining area. They were delighted when we presented a plan that not only retained a proper dining table but also created a spacious, open kitchen with ample seating around a large peninsula. This peninsula has become a central hub for family meals and casual gatherings. Our clients love to cook and enjoy watching TV while eating, so we incorporated a TV into the design, ensuring their comfort and convenience.
Transforming the Main Floor
The existing main floor was closed off and lacked flow, making the dining and living rooms feel isolated and underutilized. The outdated staircase, with its carpeted steps and wooden pickets, also needed a modern update.
Working closely with the construction team, Camila designed a plan that optimized functionality and transformed the main floor into a bright, airy space.
Opening Up the Space
Walls were removed to create an open concept, allowing natural light to flow freely and enhancing the sense of spaciousness. This immediately created a more welcoming and connected atmosphere.
Staircase Renovation
The outdated staircase was given a complete makeover. Lightly painted risers and wood treads that matched the new flooring gave it a fresh, modern look. Elegant wrought iron spindles replaced the old wooden pickets, adding a touch of sophistication and contributing to the open feel.
Powder Room Refresh
The outdated powder room was transformed with a stylish makeover. Modern fixtures, updated plumbing, and a fresh color palette created a welcoming space for guests.
A Kitchen Reborn
The existing kitchen was dated and cramped, with limited counter space and storage. This was a major concern for our clients, who loved to cook and bake. During the planning phase, an unnecessary exhaust pipe was discovered, freeing up valuable space. By incorporating the room behind the kitchen, the team created a significantly larger and more functional area.
An existing window sill was raised to match the kitchen sink window, allowing for an extra-long countertop and ample cabinetry. A four-seat peninsula provided a casual dining space with a view of the backyard. The dark, outdated cabinets were replaced with lighter ones, creating a more modern and spacious feel. Appliance garages were added to conceal small appliances, and a dedicated coffee station was incorporated for casual gatherings.
Overcoming Hiccups
Budget was a key consideration throughout the project. However, our clients recognized that this was their forever home and were committed to doing things right, without cutting corners. Their house, unfortunately, wasn’t built to modern standards, presenting some unexpected challenges.
Ultimately, they decided to increase their budget to ensure the quality they desired. We, in turn, were resourceful in selecting reasonably priced yet high-quality finishes and fixtures to create the home of their dreams.
During the design phase, we encountered an unexpected obstacle: an exhaust pipe from the basement that ran through a wall we planned to demolish. Our initial design incorporated this pipe, concealing it behind faux kitchen cabinet doors. However, during construction, further analysis revealed that the pipe could be removed entirely! This was a pleasant surprise, freeing up valuable space and allowing for even more kitchen storage.
Peace of Mind During Construction
With the renovation in Sosna’s capable hands, our clients were able to stay with their daughter, who lives outside the city, throughout the entire process. Sosna’s proactive communication kept them informed every step of the way. Leo, the on-site team member, provided regular updates, ensuring our clients knew exactly what was happening and when. This open communication allowed them to anticipate their return to their newly renovated home. Despite the inconvenience of staying with their daughter, they appreciated the smooth construction process, especially after hearing so many renovation horror stories.
Exceeding Expectations
The completed renovation was everything our clients had hoped for and more. The project was finished on time and within budget, and the results were stunning. Our clients were thrilled with their new, inviting space, perfect for entertaining and everyday living. Our clients’ daughter, known for her keen eye for detail, was impressed with the quality of the renovation. This was a testament to our team’s dedication to exceeding expectations.
A Lasting Impact
This couple wholeheartedly recommends Sosna to anyone considering a home renovation. Their experience highlights the importance of finding a contractor who prioritizes clear communication, transparency, and client collaboration. Sosna’s commitment to these values transformed not just their home, but their entire renovation experience.
