This renovation project was a special one for us. The Sosna team had the pleasure of working with a lovely retired couple in their early 70s who returned for a second round of work with us. It’s always a testament to the quality of our work when our clients come back for more. Working with the same team also ensures good results because of our familiarity with the structure. This time around, they wanted to tackle the basement of the home and the bathrooms that we had skipped over in the first renovation. They were convinced that we could further transform their space and bring the entire home up to speed with their lifestyle and needs. We were more than happy to offer our assistance and continue bringing our special touch to a well-known structure in Maple. Feel free to read more about this lovely couple’s first Sosna Renovation.

The “Before” Blues: What Was Holding Back the Home?
Both of the bathrooms in the clients’ home were stuck in a time warp. When anyone wanted into them, it was clear that they were cramped, dim, and lacking in storage. They needed linen storage to organize their towels and washcloths, but the bulky linen towers they had were blocking precious natural light. The entire layout of each bathroom was an inefficient use of the existing space.
Downstairs in the basement, the space was a sea of unorganized belongings. Our clients needed climate-controlled storage space at home, but there was only one lonely closet to break up the space and offer organization opportunities. Peeling linoleum tiles made the floors hard to clean, while the outdated acoustic ceiling tiles added to the underwhelming atmosphere in the basement. They were eager for a change that would provide better storage and organizational options while modernizing the space as well. Bathroom updates were the best option for improving their daily lives as well.

Ready to Rock on Some Much Needed Improvements
Having worked with us before on a major renovation project, our clients were already confident in our process and expertise. They had no hesitations in putting their home in our hands yet again for more improvements. They knew they were in good hands, which allowed us to focus on creating the perfect design solution for their needs. We also tapped into our previous work to guide our new designs, ensuring the home had a cohesive sense of style that tied the place together.

Brightening Up the Bathrooms for a Sense of Sanctuary
We started by focusing on the issues with the bathrooms. Out with the old, in with the new! These dated spaces needed more than just a few updates here and there. We create new and more effective layouts for both rooms with custom vanities that perfectly fit the available space. Both vanities feature ample drawer space for organizing all those important self care products. Shallow counter top towers provide linen storage without blocking off the natural light our clients need for a comforting bathing experience. The frameless glass shower enclosures we installed further opened up the space, creating a more inviting appearance and boosting the function of the rooms at the same time. There are no more bathroom woes and our clients can continue safely using these showers for years to come as they age in place.
While both bathrooms share a similar footprint now, we gave each a distinct personality with careful design choices. The lower bathroom exudes a modern, spa-like ambiance thanks to details like off-white textured tiles, a sleek white oak vanity, and contemporary light fixtures. Upstairs, we opted for a more luxurious and dramatic feel. This was easily achieved with the combination of polished marble-look tiles, a richly stained oak vanity, and elegant transitional fixtures. Both of these spaces now feature stunning brushed nickel plumbing fixtures that add a touch of sparkle and sophistication without distracting from any other features.
A Basement Reborn: Bigger and Better Than Ever
Initially, our clients just wanted to keep things simple in the basement. They envisioned a few simple drywall closets to organize their belongings and keep everything from feeling so cluttered. But we have the design expertise to dream bigger, so we encouraged them to go beyond just the basics. We designed two large closets for ample storage, plus a custom media unit and a clever cabinet designed specifically for their roll-in sewing machine table and piano. This transformed the basement from a basic and boring storage wasteland into a functional and inviting space. They can head down there to relax, pursue their favorite hobbies, and enjoy their retirement to the fullest without feeling overwhelmed by their surroundings.

Overcoming a Minor Hiccup
Even though we had worked on this home before, we still had to deal with some surprises as we tackled the second renovation. We encountered some unexpected ductwork that interfered with our original plans for a wide niche in the bathroom for built-in storage. It was no problem at all to adjust the design since Sosna is a design-build team all in one. We simply adjusted the niche’s position, maximizing its width and storage capacity while working around the existing ductwork.
Life After the Renovation: Better Than Ever Before
The transformation of our clients’ home has been remarkable. The bathrooms are no longer cramped or dated, but are rather bright, spacious, and functional instead. These spaces serve our clients well during their daily routines and make guests happy to visit again and again. The basement has gone from a cluttered space to an organized oasis, offering a comfortable and versatile space for relaxation and hobbies. Our clients are thrilled with the results, enjoying the added comfort and convenience these renovations have brought to their lives.
Memorable Moments from the Project
This project was a joy for our team from start to finish. Our clients were incredibly trusting and appreciative of our skills after our previous work together, especially when we presented ideas that enhanced the functionality of their basement. They valued our design expertise and were willing to invest in solutions that truly elevated their lifestyle. We’re honored to have played a part in creating a more beautiful and functional home for this wonderful couple. It’s projects like these that remind us why we love what we do, from design to delivery!
