Our clients for this project were the Chimbos, a vibrant couple in their early 50s. They had spent over three decades in the same beloved abode, and their adult sons still share the home with them. While they cherished the place and wanted to continue to enjoy it, the home wasn’t quite meeting their needs as a family. They had many fond memories of spending time in the kitchen, but it had become a relic of the past. The room was no longer serving their needs or reflecting the dynamic lifestyle of all four residents. They envisioned a space where culinary creativity could shine, a room that supported family gatherings with far less effort and better flow. The clients wanted to bring joy back to their cooking routine and make a space that was perfectly suited to entertaining friends and loved ones. The Challenge: A Dated and Cramped Space

Important small appliances stayed out all the time, leaving little free space for other preparation tasks. Years of daily use had taken their toll on the cabinetry. The doors and fronts were faded and worn. Dark paint and outdated wallpaper tied the style of the kitchen to a bygone era, creating a dim and heavy atmosphere that affected the main floor. It was clear from the start that the kitchen needed a complete re-imagining from the Sosna design team. The transformation would not only enhance functionality and support the clients’ lifestyles, but also infuse the space with light, style, and a renewed sense of energy.

Opening Up the Space
A key element of the transformation we produced for our clients was the plan to remove the wall that separated the kitchen from the adjacent dining room space. This strategic demolition instantly opened up the entire space, creating the seamless flow our clients were looking for when they came to Sosna. The space now encourages interaction and connection, both as part of the daily routine and during special occasions. Natural light now floods the area, illuminating what were once dim corners and creating the inviting ambiance that was a big priority for the family.
Embracing a Modern Aesthetic
While major renovation projects like this one often involve major demolition, that’s only the first step in creating the kitchen our clients dreamed of for years. We established the expanded layout they wanted and then moved on to focusing on crafting a kitchen that seamlessly blends style and functionality. The focus of the new design was a set of sleek, custom-designed cabinetry with a pristine snow white finish. These cabinets now grace the walls, providing ample storage options to keep the countertops clutter-free. A striking bar-height peninsula also serves as a centerpiece, providing the space needed for casual family meals and conversations about the day.
With a passion for cooking, the Chimbos now revel in the abundance of counter space available to all four of them. Culinary creations can come to life with ease, while the stylish materials remain surprisingly easy to keep clean. A dedicated breakfast station, complete with a high-end coffee machine and ample space for small appliances like waffle makers and griddles, streamlines their morning routine. It was just one of the many ways we added a touch of personalized convenience to the space.
To elevate the aesthetic of the kitchen, we also incorporated luxurious quartz countertops. These sparkling features offer the look of real stone without the care and maintenance required by many other materials. They’re heat resistant and can be used for mixing and rolling out dough, making them an ideal choice for a family that loves to cook. Yet the material also adds a touch of sophistication to the space as well, especially with the coordinating backsplash. Matte black hardware and fixtures provide a striking contrast against the white cabinetry, creating a modern and timeless appeal that will age gracefully over the next few decades.
Extending the Transformation
We didn’t stop at giving the kitchen the overhaul it needed. The transformation continued throughout the rest of the main floor, starting with new vinyl flooring. Fresh paint breathed new life into both the main and second floors. This cohesive design approach created a unified aesthetic throughout the space. It gave the entire home a modern and transitional feel that was perfect for the lifestyle the Chimbos currently enjoy. While we could have simply stuck to the updates needed in the kitchen, we suggested these other improvements to the clients to help make the most of the renovation. Now they won’t need to worry about flooring or paint updates for quite a while.
