Our clients approached us to renovate their kitchen, which was closed off from the rest of the main floor and had a cramped feel to it. As a couple in their 40s, they wanted more options for entertaining guests without feeling isolated and separated from their guests. They’re always cooking and inviting friends around, but their former home’s layout had a lack of space for those activities in particular. They longed for a home that better fit their lifestyle and needs. The clients also recognized it was time to give their kitchen an update and embrace some modern materials and appliances that would add a new level of luxury to the space.

A Kitchen Transformation: From Cramped to Chic

Embracing the Open Concept
We started out by removing the walls surrounding the kitchen. While closed layout kitchens were popular when the client’s home was first built, it’s not as popular today. They wanted the open layout concept you’ll find in most modern home designs today. We achieved that goal for them in a great way. We also expanded the kitchen across the new open area we created, introducing a lot more counter space for functionality and beauty alike. This produced an open space that called out for an enormous island to serve as the gathering point of the home. Guests can chat with our clients as they prepare meals or mix drinks, encouraging plenty of mingling and avoiding the need to dash between separate rooms. The island also packs in lots of storage for wine, appliances, and more. It’s the ideal heart of a party or dinner with friends.
Turning Obstacles into Design Features
We were still in the planning stages and preparing the design for the clients when it was discovered that the beams and posts in the structure would need to remain. It was possible to remove the walls and create an open layout, but the posts would stay as part of the design for support. Our talented designer Chantal was able to make these beams and posts the heart of the design, giving it a classical look that is well-balanced by all the modern details. It creates a harmony that brings the eyes upward and expands the sense of space in the room rather than distracting from it.
Classic Meets Contemporary
The new kitchen features plenty of updates that help it stand out from its previous look. The classic black and white cabinets were a priority for the client. They also help tie the space together with the posts by contrasting against the white color palette used for the rest of the room. There’s a sense of drama created by highlighting the rear wall, while the dark colors help the cabinets blend in with each other rather than distracting from the design. Brass fixtures and accents were chosen to further highlight the transitional style that blends the best of both contemporary and traditional looks.
Illuminating the Space
In addition to the new cabinets, we knew we needed to add plenty of both task and ambient lighting to the space. We brightened up the space with careful placement of a wide array of different light fixtures. Ambient lighting created a sense of peace and calm that was welcoming to all, while targeted task lighting prevents injuries while chopping carrots. We improved the visibility in the kitchen on a practical level, which was a major priority since the clients love cooking and spend a lot of time in the kitchen.
Luxury Vinyl: Style and Durability
We also installed luxury vinyl flooring throughout the open main floor space. It’s stylish and offers the look of real wood, but it’s much more durable and easy to maintain in a kitchen area.
On Time and On Budget
From the start of the project, our clients were concerned about staying within their budget. Sticking to the building timeline was also a major selling point for them. They didn’t want to end up spending more money or time than they expected on the project. We understood that and took their concerns seriously at every stage. Ultimately, we eased their concerns by keeping the project on time and within the allotted budget. We did this without asking the clients to compromise on their vision for the finished design or the materials they wanted. It’s our specialty to find ways to work with almost any request made by our clients, or to at least find a solution that works for everyone at once.
A Dream Kitchen Realized
We were able to create the client’s dream kitchen, with all the space and flow they’ve always wanted. Since the work was completed, they’ve been busy doing all their favorite things in it. They’ve hosted plenty of parties and enjoyed hours of cooking together, making the most of the new kitchen and all of its luxurious features. The extra storage doesn’t hurt either when it comes time to clean everything up and achieve an uncluttered look on the counters. It’s a serene place that becomes quite lively and fun when it’s packed with all the friends of the clients.
