The Goldbergs, young professionals in their mid-forties with two children, dreamed about an open-concept main floor layout. Their house felt closed off, with small rooms and walls dividing the Main Floor. They felt isolated and claustrophobic. Their Kitchen was really dated and lacked space.
Our solution was to tear down all the load-bearing walls and relocate the Kitchen to a more central spot. This allowed us to add an extra window, allowing the natural sunlight in to make the whole Main Floor airy and bright.
During demolition, we discovered some serious structural issues created by the previous owner’s DIY renovation. Using steel beams and metal posts we were able to resolve the issue and prevent a potentially dangerous situation.
We raised the Kitchen window to accommodate the countertop. We enlarged the existing opening between the Kitchen and Family Room and raised the dropped floor in the Family Room so we could expand the Kitchen. The new custom-made Kitchen cabinetry with double shaker doors and plenty of functional storage became the heart of their home.
Durable contemporary hardwood flooring unified the Main Floor with simple elegance and quality to last a lifetime. The stairs were refinished and updated with new pickets and railings. The Laundry Room was moved down to the Basement, and the former Laundry space was transformed into a Mud Room with custom-made cabinetry and hidden shelves for plenty of functional storage. The refreshed Powder Room with new sophisticated finishes adds charm to this renovated home.
This couple can now cook and entertain while watching their children play without obstruction. They are overjoyed and can’t wait to spend time in their brand-new home.
